Sitting as
much still as I do [see computers],
getting to move your body a bit can be quite enjoyable (and no, I
don't consider computer games a sport -- I find the whole concept
of shooting others and calling it a sport ridiculous). Personally,
I prefer team sports, because of the added social aspect of it
[see society], and because you get to
use your head a bit (volleyball springs to mind,
for instance -- definitely one of my favorite sports, it's like
70% team play ;-) ).
Unfortunately, sports require some kind of organization, and I feel that there is a lack of that organization here in Norway where I live. Until you're about 12-13, it's no problem to participate in a team of some sort (oh well, almost, I've had my problems with that too ;-) ), but once you reach a certain age, it's almost impossible to enter a new sport. I mean, after a certain age, everybody seems to be more and more result oriented [see process vs. goal orientation], and the important thing is suddenly to win, not only to have fun. Sure, it's fun to win, but I can stand losing or not even playing too -- but only if everybody stands on equal footing. If I was to start playing something actively today, I would most likely be on a team where everybody had already played the last 7-8 years, and we'd not be on the same level at all. In addition, there is a certain level of dedication involved -- people training 3-4 times a week is not unusual at all... So, really, what I'm missing is some sort of mass sports organization for those who haven't been `in the game' for the last ten years. Is it possible? (And sorry, no, lifting weights just doesn't appeal to me [see me] -- plus, it's rather expensive :-) )
